Why Do I Need Snow Chains?

Snow chains are compulsory for vehicles in winter on most Alpine roads, including 4 x 4 vehicles. Police may stop you and deny you further access if you do not carry suitable snow chains. All our snow chains comply with European legislations, and so will enable you to complete your journey and not end up stranded a few miles away from your destination. To the right the image displays where your tyre and rim size can be found on your existing wheel on your car.

Using Snow Chains:

It is better to control your car by steering rather than braking. Hitting the bank or being stuck in a snow drift is better than going over the edge! If you go into a skid, turn the front wheels in the direction of the skid and release your brake. After the skid ceases, gently apply your brakes.

Legal Requirements

In the UK we have no legal requirement for vehicles to carry snow chains or any other traction aid during the winter. As a consequence of this, we have at least one or two instances during the winter when a snowfall causes absolute chaos on the roads.

In areas of Europe where they are more used to snowfalls it is a legal requirement to be prepared for such occurrences, particularly in alpine regions. So if you plan to visit France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy or any of the Scandinavian countries you should be aware that there are certain areas where snow chains or other traction aids must be carried and without which you may be refused entry.
